Burger King Corporation is an American multinational chain of fast food hamburger restaurants.
Headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida, the company was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a restaurant chain based in Jacksonville, Florida.
When Burger King's predecessor first opened in Jacksonville in 1953, its menu consisted mainly of basic hamburgers, fries, soft drinks, milkshakes and desserts. After being bought out by its franchisees in Miami, Florida and renamed to its current name in 1954, BK began expanding the breadth of its menu by adding the Whopper sandwich in 1957. This quarter-pound hamburger (4 oz (110 g) ) was created by new Burger King owners James McLamore and David Edgerton as a way to differentiate BK from other burger joints at the time.
